Holladay family papers, 1760-1940 (bulk 1820-1936).

The collection contains family correspondence including Civil War letters describing prison life at Point Lookout, Md., land records and surveys, physician's account books (1842-1846 and 1898-1900), medical student's notebooks (1894-1896), and business accounts, journals and patent information relating to typewriters. Also included are diaries (1851-1861) of Mary Jane Boggs which contain a section describing travel through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The collection also contains papers (1826) of the North Anna Company relating to its attempts to improve navigation on the North Anna River. Agricultural essays and book (1823) describing cheese processing experiments and drawings of a bag machine invented by John Mansfield Holladay are also included. The collection also contains clippings (1869-1881) relating to state and national politics. Genealogical materials relating to the Boggs, Carter, Kettlewell, Lewis, Rawlings, Thompson, Trigg, and Waller families and the papers of Waller Holladay, farmer of Spotsvlvania County, Dr. Lewis Littlepage Holladay, and Dr. Lewis Holladay of Orange County complete the collection. Correspondents include Sir William Osler, Harry Flood Byrd, Henry Thompson Holladay, Huldah Holladay, Frances Porter Holladay, Alexander Holladay and other Holladay family members.
